AM - QUIZ Bowl- University of Mindanao (Matina Campus) Gymnasium

Our very own team, Catherine Remolleno BSCS 4 (the last year’s champion along with Mary Grace Ignacio) and Aiza Loraine Mencidor BSIT 4 managed to lead the easy and moderate rounds but failed to maintain their leading during the difficult round. The questions were taken from PhilNits topics and standards. Knowing that the two were so busy with their projects and the lacked of preparations emotionally and intellectually but they nailed UIC in the top 5 best performing teams in this event. They just maximized their team efforts and individual expertise to survive the hurdle. Congratulations! I am proud of you ladies!

PM - Student Researches Presentation

For the faculty side, there was a MSW (Monthly Seminar Workshop) about FOSS: Free Open Source Softwares held at the Ateneo de Davao University.

The whole session in the afternoon was allotted for different student researches (both defended/approved and ongoing) from the different colleges and universities in the region. There was a parallel session for the different presentations. UIC again has showcased their best in this area wherein 5 groups were sent to present, 2 from BSCS and 3 for BSIT. Aside from UIC, Ateneo de Davao University, UP Mindanao, and University of Southeastern Philippines have presented as well their best researches/projects. BTW, I was assigned to be the emcee in one of the venues.

Second Day

Whole Day - Programming Contest

As usual, programming contest will consume the whole day. AM session was allotted for practice session and general orientation on the environment used in the contest such as the PC^2, and the languages used.

The afternoon session was the formal contest wherein 3 hours were given to the participant to solve the 6 problems (ACM standard problems). Similar format of the problems used in the National Competition.

To make the story short, with lacked of practice and coordination. The UIC Programming team has managed to maintain its 2007 performance in this event. We placed 2nd overall beating the other 13 teams in the region. Just a portion of minutes difference from the first place. UIC managed to solved 3 problems. UP Mindanao was the champion, Ateneo de Davao University was 3rd place and Notre Dame of Marbel University was the fourth place.

Congratulations guys! You made us very proud of you!

Generally, the IT Olympiad this year has many pros and cons but the bottom line it ended with satisfaction knowing the number of partipating schools were no joke.

Valentine history in Many Perspectives

Valentine's Day History
There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.

In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800's and now the date is very commercialised. The town of Loveland, Colorado, does a large post office business around February 14. The spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.

The History of Saint Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.

The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavoured to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feaSt. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.

St. Valentine's Story
Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law!

Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."

I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh -- because they know that love can't be beaten!

Valentine Traditions
Hundreds of years ago in England, many children dressed up as adults on Valentine's Day. They went singing from home to home. One verse they sang was:

Good morning to you, valentine;
Curl your locks as I do mine ---
Two before and three behind.
Good morning to you, valentine.

In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!"

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him.

Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

A love seat is a wide chair. It was first made to seat one woman and her wide dress. Later, the love seat or courting seat had two sections, often in an S-shape. In this way, a couple could sit together -- but not too closely!

Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry, As you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.

Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seeds that remain on the stem. That is the number of children you will have.

If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will also know how many children you will have.

10th PSITE National Convention was held at the National Capital Region particularly in Heritage Hotel along Roxas Boulevard. I was able to attend the said national convention. This time, I am hoping that I could attend the convention since it is being held here in Mindanao to cater to the wish of Mindanao ICT educators and organizations just to lessen the fare and lodging expenses. FYI, about 10 or 11 were the attendees of the last convention from Region 11. We were noted as one, if not the best PSITE Chapter in the Philippines because of its undying activities in the academe, industries, and community involvements, not just solely for Region 11 but affecting the Mindanao island . Actually, the said dates of the convention were the same with our decided dates for ITE Foundation Days. Until now, I am contemplating of either to register and attend or not. I gave myself a deadline to decide until Monday, February 2, 2009. It’s very difficult to decide since I was assigned to spearhead the Foundation days.

Side trip to the convention, not to mention the famous Dakak Beack Resort, the Boracay Haven of Mindanao is part of the convention and it will be promoted in the convention. Not just Dakak, this will promote as well Mindanao as haven of tourist spots and sights. To recall, Dakak was one of the preliminary swinsuit competition venues of the 1994 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant.

Windows XP going off market in June: What it means

Microsoft originally announced over a year ago that Windows XP would be going off the market in January 2008. XP was later given a brief stay of execution, to June 30, 2008. That deadline is fast approaching, which has led to much panicking from people who aren't quite sure what XP's "going off market" means, exactly.

People are still as confused as ever. So let's take a stab at clarifying, once again, what's going to happen by answering some frequently asked questions about XP's imminent disappearance.

Will Windows XP really no longer be on sale after June 30? Sorry for the double negative, but no. All this means is that Microsoft will stop selling the OS. Finding a computer with XP preinstalled will likely be very difficult, as well. However, you'll still be able to find copies for the foreseeable future, and likely the unforeseeable one, too. See for yourself: You can find copies of just about any Microsoft product, including ancient versions of Windows and even MS-DOS, by simply searching online. But hang on to your current copy of Windows XP. You may need it down the road if you don't want to move to Vista.

Will I be forced to upgrade to Vista soon? No. But it will get harder and harder not to, especially since new software and peripherals are likely to stop working with XP. That could take years.

Will my XP machine stop working in June? No, but Microsoft will stop releasing non-security software updates to the masses on April 14, 2009. But let's be clear: XP will continue to "work" even after this point.

Will Microsoft shut off product activation for XP after June? No, that would be crazy. While no one has said this will happen, it's conceivable that Windows could shut down product activation for XP at some point. But that would only happen after XP reaches its end-of-support term (when all support plans expire). The good news for you: That happens on April 8, 2014, which should be plenty of time to get the kinks worked out of Vista-or switch to a Mac, Linux, or anything else. Bottom line: Your copy of XP will work, totally legally, for at least six more years.

What about this exception for Windows XP Home Edition I hear about? Doesn't apply to you. Microsoft will continue to sell XP to makers of ultra-cheap laptops like the Asus Eee PC until 2010 because they just can't run Vista. But it is not going to make XP Home Edition available as installable software to end-users.

What about after 2014? Well, that's unclear. But it's possible XP will stop being installable at that point. Microsoft's official policy is that these dates have "no affect [sic] on how long you can use a product," which may imply product activation will work forever. However, two things come to mind:

1) Even the most die-hard XP enthusiast will probably be ready to upgrade at that point (as XP will be nearly 15 years old, and your PC will be dead by then, I'm sure).

2) Even if Microsoft shuts off product activation, the hacker community will certainly make dozens of tools to let you continue using XP with abandon. Fret not.

Can I install XP on a PC that has Vista already on it? Yes. You can delete any partition with any OS on it (and reformat it) during the installation of XP. If you're feeling brave, you can even run both OSes at the same time by setting up a dual-boot machine.

ITE Program Significance in the UIC College Graduation of 2008!

March 24, 2008 at UIC Auditorium in Bajada Campus marked the 2008 Graduation Day for College Department. It was quite different compared to previous graduation rites from the past years. This time around was started with a baccalaureate thanksgiving mass presided by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Davao. The mass went smoothly. The homily was impacted and significant in the daily lives of the people present at that time, not just for the graduating students but as well as to the parents, faculty, administrators, friends and visitors and others. After the mass, it was followed directly by the Graduation ceremony. Traditionally, it was started with the marching of colors and bringing of the University maze and was carried by the University Registrar.

Totally, the ceremony went smoothly still and compared to previous graduation rites, it ended up earlier as it was expected. Not to mentioned, there were fewer graduates this academic year compared to last years. Other changes were, the honor graduates were infront or frontlining their batch. Each of the honor graduates was coveted as well their other instituional awards once their name was called infront.

In the ITE program, we had 3 Magna Cum Laudes and 1 Cum Laude. For the 3 Magna Cum Laudes, they were Katherine Dacanay of the BSIT, a recipient as well of the The Collegiate Immaculate Award, Service Award, Gold Medallion for Loyalty, program Outstanding Student Award, and Literary Award, another is Mary Grace Ignacio of the BSIT, recipient of program Performing Arts and Literary Awards, and proponent for the Best IT Project of 2008, and Yvonnie Marimon of the BSIT is another Magna Cum Laude and recipient of Program Performing Arts Award. The Cum Laude was awarded to Marie Chris Cadenas of the BSIT and recipient of Program Performing Arts Award.

We had as well the Outstanding IT Student for Region XI sponsored by PSITE XI and the award was given to Raphael Gregor Banta of the BSIT. He also recieved the Service and Program Outstanding Student Awards, Leadership Award, Special Talent Award, Literary Award, and proponent for the Best IT Project of 2008.

I would like to acknowledge as well the excellent performance of the two BSCS graduates of 2008. Michael Angelo Tarongoy, for Program Academic Excellence and a proponent for the Best CS Thesis of 2008 and another citation was given to Mechelle Dimas, for Program Academic Excellence and a proponent for the Best CS Thesis of 2008. Mechelle received as well the Program Performing Arts Award and Special Talent Award.

What are the origins of Lent? Did the Church always have this time before Easter?

Lent is a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works in preparation of the celebration of Easter. In the desire to renew the liturgical practices of the Church, The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican Council II stated, "The two elements which are especially characteristic of Lent — the recalling of baptism or the preparation for it, and penance — should be given greater emphasis in the liturgy and in liturgical catechesis. It is by means of them that the Church prepares the faithful for the celebration of Easter, while they hear God's word more frequently and devote more time to prayer" (no. 109). The word Lent itself is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words lencten, meaning "Spring," and lenctentid, which literally means not only "Springtide" but also was the word for "March," the month in which the majority of Lent falls.

Since the earliest times of the Church, there is evidence of some kind of Lenten preparation for Easter. For instance, St. Irenaeus (d. 203) wrote to Pope St. Victor I, commenting on the celebration of Easter and the differences between practices in the East and the West: "The dispute is not only about the day, but also about the actual character of the fast. Some think that they ought to fast for one day, some for two, others for still more; some make their ‘day’ last 40 hours on end. Such variation in the observance did not originate in our own day, but very much earlier, in the time of our forefathers" (Eusebius, History of the Church, V, 24). When Rufinus translated this passage from Greek into Latin, the punctuation made between "40" and "hours" made the meaning to appear to be "40 days, twenty-four hours a day." The importance of the passage, nevertheless, remains that since the time of "our forefathers" — always an expression for the apostles — a 40-day period of Lenten preparation existed. However, the actual practices and duration of Lent were still not homogenous throughout the Church.

Lent becomes more regularized after the legalization of Christianity in A.D. 313. The Council of Nicea (325), in its disciplinary canons, noted that two provincial synods should be held each year, "one before the 40 days of Lent." St. Athanasius (d. 373) in this "Festal Letters" implored his congregation to make a 40-day fast prior to the more intense fasting of Holy Week. St. Cyril of Jerusalem (d. 386) in his Catechectical Lectures, which are the paradigm for our current RCIA programs, had 18 pre-baptismal instructions given to the catechumens during Lent. St. Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444) in his series of "Festal Letters" also noted the practices and duration of Lent, emphasizing the 40-day period of fasting. Finally, Pope St. Leo (d. 461) preached that the faithful must "fulfill with their fasts the Apostolic institution of the 40 days," again noting the apostolic origins of Lent. One can safely conclude that by the end of the fourth century, the 40-day period of Easter preparation known as Lent existed, and that prayer and fasting constituted its primary spiritual exercises.

Of course, the number "40" has always had special spiritual significance regarding preparation. On Mount Sinai, preparing to receive the Ten Commandments, "Moses stayed there with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights, without eating any food or drinking any water" (Ex 34:28). Elijah walked "40 days and 40 nights" to the mountain of the Lord, Mount Horeb (another name for Sinai) (I Kgs 19:8). Most importantly, Jesus fasted and prayed for "40 days and 40 nights" in the desert before He began His public ministry (Mt 4:2).

Once the 40 days of Lent were established, the next development concerned how much fasting was to be done. In Jerusalem, for instance, people fasted for 40 days, Monday through Friday, but not on Saturday or Sunday, thereby making Lent last for eight weeks. In Rome and in the West, people fasted for six weeks, Monday through Saturday, thereby making Lent last for six weeks. Eventually, the practice prevailed of fasting for six days a week over the course of six weeks, and Ash Wednesday was instituted to bring the number of fast days before Easter to 40. The rules of fasting varied. First, some areas of the Church abstained from all forms of meat and animal products, while others made exceptions for food like fish. For example, Pope St. Gregory (d. 604), writing to St. Augustine of Canterbury, issued the following rule: "We abstain from flesh, meat, and from all things that come from flesh, as milk, cheese and eggs."

Second, the general rule was for a person to have one meal a day, in the evening or at 3 p.m.

These Lenten fasting rules also evolved. Eventually, a smaller repast was allowed during the day to keep up one’s strength from manual labor. Eating fish was allowed, and later eating meat was also allowed through the week except on Ash Wednesday and Friday. Dispensations were given for eating dairy products if a pious work was performed, and eventually this rule was relaxed totally. (However, the abstinence from even dairy products led to the practice of blessing Easter eggs and eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.)

Over the years, modifications have been made to the Lenten observances, making our practices not only simple but also easy. Ash Wednesday still marks the beginning of Lent, which lasts for 40 days, not including Sundays. The present fasting and abstinence laws are very simple: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, the faithful fast (having only one full meal a day and smaller snacks to keep up one’s strength) and abstain from meat; on the other Fridays of Lent, the faithful abstain from meat. People are still encouraged "to give up something" for Lent as a sacrifice. (An interesting note is that technically on Sundays and solemnities like St. Joseph's Day (March 19) and the Annunciation (March 25), one is exempt and can partake of whatever has been offered up for Lent.

Nevertheless, I was always taught, "If you gave something up for the Lord, tough it out. Don’t act like a Pharisee looking for a loophole." Moreover, an emphasis must be placed on performing spiritual works, like attending the Stations of the Cross, attending Mass, making a weekly holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament, taking time for personal prayer and spiritual reading and most especially making a good confession and receiving sacramental absolution. Although the practices may have evolved over the centuries, the focus remains the same: to repent of sin, to renew our faith and to prepare to celebrate joyfully the mysteries of our salvation.

"King of spam" pleads guilty, faces 26 years in prison

San Francisco - The notorious spammer authorities dubbed "the king of spam" is facing a possible 26-year jail sentence after pleading guilty in Seattle on Friday to charges of fraud and tax evasion.

Robert Soloway, 28, had already been found guilty of spam charges in several civil cases -- Microsoft won a $7.8 million judgment against him in 2005 -- but had avoided paying fines in those cases. The criminal charges to which he pleaded guilty on Friday followed his arrest in 2007 by the U.S. Justice Department.

He was arrested on criminal charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice in May 2007.

In a 2005 discussion group post, Soloway bragged, "I've been sued for hundreds of millions of dollars and have had my business running for over 10 years without ever paying a dime regardless to the outcome of any lawsuits."

That year, Soloway raked in more than $300,000 from his spam operations, according to his plea agreement.

Soloway has avoided fines in the past, but this time around he may not be so lucky. In addition to the jail time he now faces, he has also agreed to discuss his financial assets while being monitored by a lie detector.

While there have been hundreds of spam prosecutions in the United States, it is extremely rare for spammers to face criminal charges, and those involved in the matter say that Soloway's case could serve as a deterrent to other spammers.

In an interview last month, Microsoft senior attorney Aaron Kornblum said he thought the prosecution would make other spammers think twice. "There have not been a large number of criminal CAN-SPAM prosecutions in the U.S.," he said. "This is significant."

Soloway is set to be sentenced on June 20. The prosecution had been seeking $700,000 in damages when Soloway was first charged nearly a year ago.

The Unfinished Business !

Yesterday, was the fight of Manny of the Philippines to Marquez of Mexico and it was one of the heartfelt boxing moments in the arena. Technically, according to experts, it was Marquez's event yesterday but who knows, the judges have spoken at that time and the new champion was announced and went to Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines.

Many are saying that it was not a convincing result. But aside from, still Manny managed to went on to 12th round of excitement. Filipinos are happy until now since, the unfinished business of the two way back 2004 has put to period and ended up with paving way again to the world that Filipino boxers are not "street" boxers but with heart and soul when it comes to fighting.

Congratulations to Manny, you made us proud again! And for that time, no crimes were registered since Filipinos still are hoping that Manny is the instrument of Peace to all. So, what is the next move? Who will fight Manny? I dunno, but we are always hoping that he will bring more honors and pride to our country.

Indeed, Manny is technically good in boxing but the anchors were saying that Marquez is one of the wise boxers in the history.

Pacquiao VS Marquez, The Event!

LAS VEGAS, Nevada—For bettors, chances are almost nil that Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez will knock out Filipino challenger Manny Pacquiao in the first round of their World Boxing Council Super featherwight title bout on Saturday.

As of Friday evening, a $100 bet on such occurrence would return a hefty $4,200.

A first round knockout by Pacquiao, on the other hand, would net just $1,800 for every $100 wager.

History plays a part in the stacking of odds: Pacquiao downed Marquez three times in the opening round of their first meeting on May 8,2004 that eventually ended in a draw.

Pacquiao is listed a heavy favorite for this rematch at -235 and Marquez is at +195. Simply put a $235 bet on Pacquiao would just net $100 while a $100 wager on Marquez would give $195.

Pacquiao’s reputation as a power puncher is also evident with odds of him scoring a knockout listed at 77 percent.

Bettors think there will be a stoppage this time, with a $165 bet returning just $100.

This is a hate letter coming from a radio talk show host Mr. Art Bell from Nevada. I don’t consider myself as patriotic but please read my reply below in BOLD LETTERS and send this to as many of your

This is an open letter email by Art Bell, a radio talk show host in Nevada(more info in the email itself). Here is yet another person who has taken advantage of his power and privilege to use hateful words and racial stereotypes that breed further ignorance and intolerance in our society.

Art Bell is a talk radio host who has two shows that he broadcasts from his home in Nevada,
that is rebroadcast by 400 stations across the country.

He’s written 2 books. He lived in Okinawa, Japan for some years and had a radio program on the English station here. And, though it’s hard to believe after reading the following letter from him, he actually has been to the Philippines (he’s traveled fairly extensively around the world).

Filipinos…..*make me puke* (Art Bell)

As we’ve all come to notice, in the past few decades, Filipinos have begun to infest the United States like some sort of disease. Their extensive involvement in the U.S. Armed Forces is proof of the trashy kind of qualities all Filipinos tend to exhibit on a regular basis. You can see this clearly by studying the attitudes and cultural Icons of most Filipino Americans.

Origins of Pinoys/Pinays:

Are they really Asian? Well we’ve come to accept the fact the Filipinos come from a part of the world known as SouthEast Asia. But the term “Asia” is used in the wrong way. You may notice that contemporary Filipino Americans try very hard to associate themselves with groups that we know as Asian. I cannot count the number of times I have seen a ‘Third World’ Filipino try to connect themselves to the Chinese or Japanese people. There is no connection and here’s why. The Philippines is a Third World country. Nothing respectable has EVER been created by Filipino people during our entire human history. Young Filipino men in America have become obsessed with “import racing”. They have an enormously perverted affection for Japanese cars. It’s a common phenomenon. In their minds, these Filipinos somehow believe that they are Asian and that it somehow connects them to Japanese people and Japanese cars. They often take credit for the ingenuity of Japanese people and say how it’s an “Asian thing”. This
term…”Asian thing” derived directly from African American slang “blackthang”. “It’s a black thang.” “It’s an asian thang.” You can see the connection. It’s even funnier that, in Japan, Filipinos are heavily discriminated against. The only filipinos that can live successfully in Japan are the filipino prostitutes. But that’s the case for most Filipino people no matter where they live in the world. Now we’ve come down to this fact…and it is a fact.

Nothing in Filipino Culture can be seen as Asian. They have no architectural, artistic, or cultural influence which is in ANY way, asian. Thinking of the great countries in Asia such as Japan, Korea, and China there is no way you can possibly connect the Philippine Islands. This assault by filipino americans to connect themselves with the great peoples of North East Asia is foul and disgusting. Try visiting a young filipino’s web site too. You’ll see something called the “Asian IRC Ring”. It has to do with the chatrooms. The most horrible thing about this is that these TRASHY people are trying to associate themselves with Asia again!! People in Asia don’t act like, this at all. What we are seeing here is the natural Filipino in it’s element with full access to technology and this is how they act! You will consistently see this behavior over and over again.

Another interesting thing is that these “thirdworld” people also frequent RC chatrooms such as #chinese #japan and #asian. They must believe that they are some how related racially or culturally to North Asians. But it’s completely WRONG! There might have been some distant contact With China and even less with Japan during World War II, but these people are actually more closely related to african americans and Mexican americans.

Do the parents of these young filipinos know what’s going on? Would they accept this? I believe that they would and do. This is the natural “Trash” element in filipinos manifesting itself. Nothing good has ever come from Philippines and I don’t believe anything good ever will.

Recognizing your Roots (A Message to Filipinos)

To all filipino people:

Please recognize your ROOTS! You come from the Third World! You country is a disgusting and filthy place. Most people there live in poverty! Your culture has MUCH MORE SPANISH influence than chinese, and absolutely no JAPANESE influence whatsoever. People in Japan
and China, do not act like you. They do not constantly talk about sex and they have a MUCH HIGHER level of RESPECT for each other. There is NO WAY that you can connect yourself to Asia other than location. Your culture and technological advancement does not even come CLOSE to What Chinese, people have done in the past and what Japanese and Korean people are doing now! Everything you do is distinctly filipino. You cannot take credit for Japanese cars, video games, or Hentai! It’s not an “asian thing” it’s, an “American thing”. You have no concept of culture…no concept of asian ideas or asian philosophy! Can you demonstrate how you use Confucianism or Taoism in you everyday life?? You can’t. And you will NEVER be able to. I understand that you are trying to create an identity for yourselves as young people… but it is NOT related to Asia.

Your Identity is Filipino. That’s all you are. Just Filipino. Think about what that means….

I find this funny, he is right in some ways where we, as Filipinos dont actually have an “Identity”. I think this is due to the confusion of our mixed races from Hispanic, Chinese, American and Malay origins. I see it in malls, imagine young generations wearing ski caps and ski goggles in a tropical country, baggy low rise pants like that of African Americans living in the Bronx of New York, not to mention endless whitening products being sold at department stores and drug stores. But his ignorance also blinds him from the other truth. That while we may glorify Anime shows and Japanese Internet gaming, he is not aware that a nameless Filipino may be responsible for some technical aspects of some Japanese software. He is not aware of our contribution to the the society in general .Technological advancements that may have aided post war navigations and landing on the moon. That the antibiotic Erythromycin was discovered by Dr. Abelardo Aguilar from Iloilo creating the brand “Ilosone”. Thomas Edison may have discovered the electric light bulb and the fluorescent lighting was thought up by Nikola Tesla. But the fluorescent lamp we use today was invented by Agapito Flores (a Cebuano named Benigno Flores of Bantayan Island, according to the Philippine Daily inquirer), a Filipino scientist. Americans helped then-Philippine leader Ramon Magsaysay to develop it for worldwide commerce.

That the personal physician of former U.S. Pres. Bill Clinton is Eleanor “Connie” Concepcion Mariano, a Filipina doctor who was the youngest captain in the US Navy. A Filipino writer Jose Rizal could read and write at age 2, and grew up to speak more than 20 languages, including Latin, Greek, German, French and Chinese. Or that a Filipino genius was responsible for the near hiatus in the PENTAGON and White HOuse nearly infiltrating their closely guarded secrets with the “ILOVEYOU” bug. Nuisance maybe, but still one heck of a ‘beautiful mind’…not to be underestimated.The list goes on and on, but who cares right? Certainly not Mr. Art Bell…Boy, I’m not surprised. Perhaps Art Bell does not know that although we consider ourselves ASIAN because we are strategically located in the Southeast asian region of which our nearest neighbors are Malays, ASIA does not mean only Chinese and Japanese race of people. Then maybe it is his connotation that “Asia” meant only our economically successful, paler brothers and he considers Malays such as Thais, Malaysians, Indonesians, and ourselves as a “Third World” race. Then it is “his” ignonimity that would make a civilized person of whatever race puke. Imagine literally connecting Chinese, Koreans and Japanese to the Philippine Islands which is archipelagos away from the countries he has mentioned. I also wonder where he got the impression that we aspire to be Japanese(???) Hispanics maybe but not the Japanese. But even Hispanics today do not mind sharing their “surnames” to their Asian brothers who they have colonized for 3 centuries.

Another sad reality that although most Filipinos working overseas are domestic helpers and prostitutes, who does he think educates the toddlers of Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Tokyo? Parents of these countries rarely have time spent with their children, leaving them to their Filipino nannies. And with regards to prostitution. Filipinos are not the only ones working as one. I HARDLY SEE FILIPINOS STARRING IN PORN MOVIES. THERE MIGHT BE A FEW FILIPINOS WE HAVEN’T SEEN , BUT MOST ARE FROM MR. ART BELL’S RACE.

He also mentioned that we have no concept of culture..no concept of asian ideas or asian philosophy. How can we demonstrate Confucianism or Taoism in a Christian nation? IS HE INFORMED THAT THE PHILIPPINES IS THE ONLY PREDOMINANTLY CHRISTIAN/CATHOLIC NATION IN ASIA?! YOU HAVE TO USE COMMON SENSE IN A LOT OF THINGS SOMETIMES…

We do not need to create an identity for ourselves. We are who we are. Our identity stems from the anonymity we live in this world. How we contribute silently towards the progress of the world and not just one country. Although the Filipino blood may be tainted with malice, corruption, poverty and prostitution, it is not a perfect race… But so are the others. Maybe Mr. Art Bell needs to think about this. Patricia Evangelista, a 19-year-old, Mass Communications sophomore of University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman, did the country proud Friday night by besting 59 other student contestants from 37 countries in the 2004 International Public Speaking competition conducted by the English Speaking Union (ESU) in London.

BLONDE AND BLUE EYES

When I was little, I wanted what many Filipino children all over the country wanted. I wanted to be blond, blue-eyed, and white.
I thought — if I just wished hard enough and was good enough, I’d wake upon Christmas morning with snow outside my window and freckles across my nose!

More than four centuries under western domination does that to you. I have sixteen cousins. In a couple of years, there will just be five of us left in the Philippines, the rest will have gone abroad in search of “greener pastures.” It’s not just an anomaly; it’s a
trend; the Filipino diaspora.

Today, about eight million Filipinos are scattered around the world. There are those who disapprove of Filipinos who choose to leave. I used to. Maybe this is a natural reaction of someone who was left behind, smiling for family pictures that get emptier with each succeeding year. Desertion, I called it. My country is a land that has perpetually fought for the freedom to be itself. Our heroes offered their lives in the struggle against the Spanish, the Japanese, the Americans. To pack up and deny that identity is tantamount to spitting on that sacrifice.

Or is it? I don’t think so, not anymore. True, there is no denying this phenomenon, aided by the fact that what was once the other side of the world is now a twelve-hour plane ride away. But this is a borderless world, where no individual can claim to be purely from where he is now. My mother is of Chinese descent, my father is a quarter Spanish, and I call myself a pure Filipino-a hybrid of sorts resulting from a combination of cultures.

Each square mile anywhere in the world is made up of people of different ethnicities, with national identities and individual personalities. because of this, each square mile is already a microcosm of the world. In as much as this blessed spot that is England is the world, so is my neighborhood back home.

Seen this way, the Filipino Diaspora, or any sort of dispersal of populations, is not as ominous as so many claim. It must be understood. I come from a Third World country, one that is still trying mightily to get back on its feet after many years of dictatorship. But we shall make it, given more time. Especially now, when we have thousands of eager young minds who graduate from college every year. They have skills. They need jobs. We cannot absorb them all.

A borderless world presents a bigger opportunity, yet one that is not so much abandonment but an extension of identity. Even as we take, we give back. We are the 40,000 skilled nurses who support the UK’s National Health Service. We are the quarter-of-a-million seafarers manning most of the world’s commercial ships. We are your software engineers in Ireland, your
construction workers in the Middle East, your doctors and caregivers in North America, and, your musical artists in London’s West End.

Nationalism isn’t bound by time or place. People from other nations migrate to create new nations, yet still remain essentially who they are. British society is itself an example of a multi-cultural nation, a melting pot of races, religions, arts and cultures. We are, indeed, in a borderless world! Leaving sometimes isn’t a matter of choice. It’s coming back that is. The Hobbits of the shire travelled all over Middle-Earth, but they chose to come home, richer in every sense of the word. We call people like these balikbayans or the ‘returnees’ — those who followed their dream, yet choose to return and share their mature talents and good fortune.

In a few years, I may take advantage of whatever opportunities come my way. But I will come home. A borderless world doesn’t preclude the idea of a home. I’m a Filipino, and I’ll always be one. It isn’t about just geography; it isn’t about boundaries. It’s about
giving back to the country that shaped me.

And that’s going to be more important to me than seeing snow outside my windows on a bright Christmas morning.

ITE Festival 2008

It is the tradition of the ITE Program of the University of the Immaculate Conception to celebrate annually the 2-day event intended for the ITE students. This year’s theme is embarking to us as, “One Leap Higher towards Benchmarking Excellence in Information Technology”. The event will happen this February 11 - 12, 2008.

The events are divided as Academics, Social/Extra and Sports. Academis events cover the Quiz bowl, Programming Competition, Fastest Typist, Photoshop Design and Networking Challenge, What’s new with Programming competition this time is that we have invited the Engineering Program to compete with us and luckily they sent 8 of their best students in this area.
For the social events, these will happen on the 2nd day and cover the following events: MTV Spoof, Modern Dance Competition, and the Mr. and Miss ITE. These will be held at the UIC Main Auditorium from 3:00pm to 9:00pm.

The sports events cover the following: Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Dart.
There is as well seminar for students to enhance and adds up new knowledge on IT.

MANILA, Philippines—Why do scientists go into science? Most do so out of pure interest, which turns into passion, with a genuine desire to delve into the workings of the world. Others may do it for glory. Albert Einstein once said, “Politics is for the moment, but an equation is for eternity.” Very few do it for money.

Two weeks ago, four Nobel Prize chemists visited the Philippines and talked about their work and lives. During the open forum, a student mused that many Filipinos would rather go into business, where the money was, than science, where often there was only little money.

My friend Nina Rosario L. Rojas fell in love with science in Grade 5, and this love has not waned. Now she teaches biochemistry at the Ateneo de Manila Chemistry Department and the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Following is Nina’s personal account, on what happened next at the Nobel Forum.

Money and science

Prof. Yuan Tseh Lee of Taiwan, who shared the 1986 Nobel for the dynamics of chemical processes, responded, “Why do you want money?” Money enables people to do what they want, such as hobbies. But what if we are already doing what we want to do?

Eventually, we become excellent at it and indeed, rewards do come. Aside from the Nobel, Professor Lee became the leader of Academia Sinica, the foremost research institution in Taiwan. He now spends roughly US$1 million a year for what can be considered his “hobby.”

Turning to Filipino taipan Lucio Tan, Professor Lee asked, “Do you spend a million dollars a year on your hobbies?” The crowd burst into laughter as the taipan shook his head.

Of course, not every scientist wins the Nobel, and not every Nobelist has the ear of his country’s president. As another Nobelist quipped, he does not even have a hotline to his institution’s director.

But there is a ring of truth to Professor Lee’s statements. As scientists, we often simply love what we do, and for many, that love leads to a drive for excellence, and excellence often leads to public recognition and financial reward.

Do science and teaching pay? I have a roof over my head, even personal money for my books and simple hobbies. I am grateful that I do not have the severe financial pressures that make some turn to other professions and other countries. And while I may wish for a million dollars, or even just a million pesos, for our research lab, it has enough resources to keep doing biochemistry.

Love and science

Not everyone falls in love with science, and not everyone falls in love with teaching. I have been lucky to fall in love with both. And like any great love, it has become the proverbial pearl of great price. The opportunity to do what I enjoy and to do work that is meaningful keeps me going even with the daily grind. The rewards are built into the job: in the joy of discovery and application, and the joy of sharing the journey with students.

The best payment for me is when my students fall in love with their work and find their place in the world. For love is not romantic, but practical. To paraphrase Fr. Pedro Arrupe—love decides how one feels and thinks, what one does, what decisions one makes, and how one builds one’s life each day.

Loving our work leads to dedication and excellence. Prof. Aaron Ciechanover of Israel shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for unraveling the mystery of protein death. Today there are drugs in the pipeline for cancer and other diseases that owe much to this work.

Ciechanover pointed out, “We didn’t plan on anything. And I think this is the lesson: You shouldn’t plan on prizes, and recognition, or anything. But you should plan on one thing: Being excellent.”

Prof. Ryoji Noyori of Japan echoed, “Winning the prize wasn’t the purpose of my life, but simply the consequence of my dedication to science.” He shared the 2001 Nobel Prize for his work on catalysts, especially for the selective synthesis of left-handed or right-handed molecules. His work is important in the development of more environment- friendly chemicals.

The journey itself is the reward.

2008 - The Year of the Rat!

Being the first sign of the Chinese zodiac, rats are leaders, pioneers and conquerors. They are charming, passionate, charismatic, practical and hardworking. Rat people are endowed with great leadership skills and are perhaps the most organized and systematic of the twelve signs. Intelligent and cunning at the same time, rats are highly ambitious and strong-willed people who are keen and unapologetic promoters of their own agendas, which often include money and power. They are energetic and versatile and can usually find their way around obstacles, and adapt to various environments easily. A rat’s natural charm and sharp demeanor make it an appealing friend for almost anyone, but rats are usually highly exclusive and selective when choosing friends and so often have only a few very close friends whom they trust.

Behind the smiles and charm, rats can be terribly obstinate and controlling, insisting on having things their way no matter what the cost. China PR IS CROWNED MISS WORLD 2007

China PR has won the highly coveted title of Miss World 2007 in a glittering, star-studded ceremony at the Beauty Crown Theatre in Sanya, Hainan Province, China.

The 2007 Miss World Festival has seen 106 beautiful and talented contestants spend an unforgettable month in China, but there could only be one winner and the applause rang out in the packed theatre as Julia Morley, Chairman of the Miss World Organisation and of the international panel of judges, announced the winner’s name.

Her smile shone out to a worldwide TV audience of over 2 billion as she was crowned by last year’s Miss World, Tatana Kucharova.

First runner-up was Angola, followed by Mexico as second runner-up. The other two finalists were Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden.An impressive cast of international stars and music artists ensured that the 57th Miss World Final was a dazzling event. The TV spectacular was hosted by top Chinese TV presenter Angela Chow, presenting Miss World for the fifth year in succession, alongside co-host Fernando Allende, who is one of Latin America’s biggest stars and was making his Miss World debut.

The show told the story of the contestants’ stay in the tropical paradise of Sanya, with many clips of their activities and sightseeing, as well as their exciting trip to Beijing where they recorded the Olympic Torch Relay Anthem, visited the Great Wall and helped the Red Cross raise over US$5.5m to build new healthcare centres across China.

It also featured a stunning performance by international pop star Duncan James, formerly with the boy band Blue, singing ‘All I care about is love’ from the hit musical Chicago, and spectacular dancing and acrobatics from some of China’s most talented dance troupes.

Life Tidbits for 2-3 weeks!

Good day bloggers! It's nice to be back!

It’s been running 3 weeks since my last post here (June 22, 2007 to be exact). Many things were took place, challenging decisions made, mood swings (as ever), work pressures and other stuffs that really rule and affect my life for the past 2-3 weeks. What an introduction?…lol…

To give you updates about my activities for those silent and mesmerizing weeks is my pleasure (no choice).

First, I have just moved in to my new abode (thanks to PAG-IBIG Fund) for always being there for me…hhehheeh…Somewhere in Catalunan Pequeño, Wellspring Highlands. It’s just a 105 sq. meter house, not that big but totally it’s mine and I can see my savings to it every now and then. I celebrated my 1 week just last sunday and anyway no celebration took place…

Second, last July 14, 2007, I together with my 3 students competed for Mindanao-wide ICT Quiz tournament held at SM Supermall, CDO. We placed 2nd runner up (Unexpected Win as always we say!) among 15 Colleges and Universities in Mindanao. Emerged as champion was Ateneo de Zamboaga University followed by MSU-IIT and UIC landed for third place. Third, last July 20, 2007, I was elected as PIO for Philippine Society for IT Educators in Region 11 back to back with Dean Jerry Flores as newly elected Vice President for Council of Deans in IT Education in Region 11 as well. (GO, TODO NA TO!)…

Fourth, Acquaintance Party for ITE program this Saturday, July 28, 2007 from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at UIC Bajada Gym (see, sosyal!), we are looking forward for new and exciting events and activities prepared by ITE Officers this academic year. I’ve heard that ITE faculty as well has special number to be presented. Let’s see!u

Here in the school, Prelim has just culminated and another period is waiting to be battled. Many freshmen right now are starting to build their personalities to be appreciated and recognized. Most of them adjusted already the real environment in college. Many talented individuals are there. I hope they will sustain it inclduing their academic struggles.
